MegaFon, Rostelecom, Nokia make first international video call in 5G

MOSCOW, Jun 5 (PRIME) -- Russian operators MegaFon and Rostelecom jointly with Finnish telecom equipment maker Nokia have made the first international video call in local 5G networks by connecting St. Petersburg with Helsinki, MegaFon said on Wednesday in a statement.

“5G will become the blood system for the digital economy, because a whole range of businesses and directions – the Internet of Things, driverless transport, smart cities, virtual and augmented reality and many others – depend on mobile connection of the new generation,” Rostelecom President Mikhail Oseyevsky said.

“We’re sure that 5G networks should be built on a modern economic principle of sharing, when businesses and people team up to create and use resources, like radio frequencies and infrastructure.

“In such a way we’ll be able to optimize expenses and make the appearance of commercial services of 5G and new industries on its basis faster. The first step and example of this kind is a joint venture between Rostelecom and MegaFon.”

The call means the start of practical application of networks of mobile connection of the new generation, the statement read.

The second call confirmed technical capacity of joint exploitation of 5G infrastructure by various operators.
